This week due to the recent death of Rajesh Khanna we will be looking both at the birth of the Hindi film industry and the passing of one of its greatest stars.

Independence Day! Mother India (1957)
This week we will look at Mother India which was a ground breaking film that depicted the suffering of the rural poor in the form of an extended allegory about India as a mother.

This week we will read an article about one of India’s greatest film stars, born Mohammed Yusuf Khan, who has had a career stretching over five decades.

This week we will look at the career of another of the great stars of Bollywood and some of this films. In particular Guide (1965) based on the novel by R. K. Narayanan, if I can find a copy.

Naya Daur, music and more
This week we look at a classic film which depicted the conflicts of development in India during the Nehruvian period. We will also take a look at the ways in which music in Hindi films developed over the years.

Movie stars:
Pair work, write an imaginary interview between a movie star and an interviewer. Presentation to take about ten minutes.

Final Presentations week: Bollywood Masala Awards
This week we will put together our own film awards show. I and Veena will be acting as anchors for a film awards ceremony in which you will present three candidates for film (or star, or director, etc.) of the year (or decade, or forever) and then the group will vote on who should be the recipient of the award.

Assignment 4:
Bollywood Masala Awards: Each person has to present three (2 min max each) film clips and nominate a film/filmstar/director as winner of an award, and explain why the award should go to a particular recipient.

Assignment 6:
Bollywood ki khasiyat:  Write a report that highlights one aspect of Bollywood cinema, stories, actors, films, dance, and music. Each person picks a different aspect so and we compile them all into collection of articles about what makes Bollywood special.
